5 Packing Hacks That Save Space and Stress
Frequent flyers know these. Once you try them, you stop checking bags.
1. Roll, do not fold
Rolled clothes take up roughly 30% less space than folded ones, and they wrinkle less. T-shirts, jeans, casual shirts: all roll. Dress shirts are the only exception, and you can deal with those by folding around a thin layer of dry cleaning plastic.
2. Use packing cubes, sorted by category
One cube for tops, one for bottoms, one for underwear and socks, one for "miscellaneous." You stop digging through the whole suitcase to find your toothbrush, and unpacking at the hotel takes 90 seconds. They cost less than $20 for a set and last for years.
3. Stuff socks inside shoes
Shoes are space disasters. Filling the cavity with socks (or chargers, or a small pouch) saves about a liter of luggage volume per pair. Bonus: it keeps the shoes from getting crushed.
4. Wear your heaviest stuff on the plane
Boots, jacket, jeans. They are bulky in a bag and weightless on your body. You can take them off at the seat. This single trick is the difference between a 7 kg and a 10 kg carry-on.
5. One full outfit in the carry-on, always
Even if you check a bag, even for a 90-minute flight. Underwear, socks, a t-shirt, basic toiletries. The day your bag misses the connection, this is the difference between an adventure and a disaster.
The meta-rule: lay out everything you think you need, then remove a third. You will not wear it. You never do.
